PM won't spare those who looted poor: Union Minister on Mehul Choksi's arrest

 Citing PM Modi's promise to the people, Union Minister of State for Finance of India Pankaj Chaudhary said that those who have run away abroad with the money of the poor will have to eventually return their money.

Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium at the request of Indian probing agencies.

Moments after fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case, the Centre celebrated the development, with Union Minister of State for Finance of India Pankaj Chaudhary reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise to recover money from those who looted the poor and return it to them.

Citing PM Modi's promise to the people, the union minister said that those who have run away abroad with the money of the poor will have to eventually return their money.

"PM Modi had already said that the ones who have looted the money of the poor will have to return it. Action is being taken against a lot of people in the country. Mehul Choksi has been arrested. It is a very big achievement," Chaudhary was quoted as saying by ANI.

Back in 2021, PM Modi, addressing a joint conference of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said that those who cheat or loot the poor will not be spared, "no matter how powerful they are, wherever they are in the country and the world."

The Belgian authorities arrested Choksi at the request of the Indian probing agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Choksi is currently housed in a Belgium jail. His bail plea hearing is scheduled to take place after a week. In the interim, he will remain in jail. This is important as it will help India prepare a case against him through diplomatic channels.

According to sources, Choksi was planning to shift to Switzerland from Belgium for his treatment when he was arrested. Choksi was arrested on the basis of two non-bailable warrants issued by a Mumbai court in 2018 and 2021.
